“No, Samantha you can’t go to the sleepover at Maya’s house.”
“But, Mom, you can’t say that. You haven’t given me one good reason why I shouldn’t go. Mom!”
The discussion, which had already been going on for 10 minutes, continued for another 15, with escalating anger on both sides. Samantha’s mother, however, stood firm. The discussion finally ended with Samantha in tears, screaming at her mother,
Anthony Wolf: The talk you must have with your teenage son
Source: Toronto Globe and Mail
I've written about how to talk to teenage sons about responsible sexual behaviour – being considerate, always, of the wants and feelings of a potential sex partner.
But there's another talk you should have with your son: It is about abuse.
Many teenage boys – it has probably always been so – are abusive to their girlfriends. Most are not, but many are. How can you know whether your teenage son is abusive, or potentially abusive, with women? You can't.
That's why it's important for you to talk outright with your son – about what constitutes abuse, and why such behaviours are flat-out wrong. Many of the behaviours that I will list seem obvious. But most boys who abuse their girlfriends either do not think that what they are doing is abuse or think that it's somehow justified.

Anthony Wolf: My teen objects to my boyfriend moving in

During the year and a half that Amber's mother had been seeing Marty, he'd always been warm towards Amber. But from the start, Amber had been less than cordial towards Marty.
“Get up, Marty. That's where I sit. That's always my chair.”
“Marty, why are you wearing those shoes? They're all scuffed. They look stupid.”
Amber's mother had done all she could to get Amber to act more respectfully towards Marty – with little success.
Apolo Anton Ohno reaches Los Angeles!
Apolo Anton Ohno visited El Rodeo Middle School yesterday to spread the message of Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don’t Mix.
The kids of El Rodeo Middle School loved seeing Apolo, and enthusiastically played the Ask Listen Learn interactive activities, learning about the dangers of underage drinking as they did so. They also heard an inspiring message from Apolo Anton Ohno, who urged them to stay focused in order to succeed, and to always feel comfortable with themselves.
Los Angeles is the third stop in Apolo’s tour. So far, he has visited Denver and New York. Today, Apolo Anton Ohno will be bringing our message to students in Chicago, at Smyth Elementary School. From there, Apolo will be wrapping up his tour in his native Seattle on Friday!
