CNN, Ask Listen Learn, Atlanta, Apolo!

April 13, 2010

Hello Atlanta! In our effort to bring Ask, Listen, Learn to every conceivable part of the country (let’s go ahead and make it a 50 state goal,) we enlisted the help of Apolo Anton Ohno to reach out to the kids of Kennedy Middle School!

But first, we made a trip to CNN headquarters in Atlanta! Apolo explained what the Ask, Listen, Learn is all about: educating kids to have the confidence to go out in the world and make healthy, active decisions.

The kids were pumped to see Apolo, and eager to learn. We’re enormously thankful to everyone at Kennedy Middle school for the warm reception, and we hope they enjoy the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive activity we left behind!

We’ve got some news about two of our favorite athletes…

Please welcome Dara Torres, our newest Ask, Listen, Learn super star! This five-time Olympic athlete is a fierce athlete and a great role model, winning twelve Olympic medals over her career!

Apolo Anton Ohno is also joining with us again to help spread the message of Ask, Listen, Learn!

On April 13th we’re heading down to Atlanta, GA with Apolo to visit Kennedy Middle School! Apolo will be demonstrating the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive activity, telling kids to say ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking. Stay tuned for pictures and video from the event!
On April 14th, we’ll be heading up to Philadelphia, PA with Apolo, to St. Michael’s Parish.
On April 20th, we’ll head to the Arlington Science Focus Elementary School, in Arlington, VA, and Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School in Laurel, MD.

But we’re saving the best for last. On April 22nd, SuperStars Dara Torres and Apolo Anton Ohno will be participating in Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day in Washington, DC! Check our events page for details!

The Century Council brings Ask Listen Learn to Liberty, NC!

March 30, 2010

Braving thunderstorms and tornadoes, The Century Council brought its Ask, Listen, Learn program to Liberty, NC on Monday for an event with Rep. Howard Coble (NC-06.)

We had a great event. The kids were excited to try the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive activity – learning about the dangers of underage drinking  - while also breaking out in a sweat. Kids also learned about the Ask, Listen, Learn site, where they can register profiles and read about SuperStars such as Apolo Anton Ohno!

Thanks Principal Miller, and of course Rep. Coble for taking part in this event! And thanks to the kids of Northeastern Randolph Middle School for saying ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking!

Check below for pictures of the event!

College students, it's your turn!

March 23, 2010

For most of us here at The Century Council, college is a couple years in the rearview mirror. While our Research Department provides us with great quantitative and qualitative research on the drinking habits of college students, there’s something to learn from those still schlepping to lectures.

For that reason, The Century Council is happy to announce that we will be partnering with four universities across the nation in helping them to carry through their plans to fight college binge drinking. The four universities are University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, The University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, The George Washington University, and Ohio University.

These students’ campaigns will be based upon the work they did for the 2009 National Student Advertising Competition, an annual competition hosted by the American Advertising Federation. These schools will receive grant money to evaluate college binge drinking, implement a strategy to fight it, and then measure their results.

We’re focused on college binge drinking in other ways as well. We’ve provided a research grant to the Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) to learn more about the role of emergency services with regard to college binge drinking. We’ve also partnered with the Center for Leadership in Public Service at Fisher College to further explore the issue of college binge drinking from the perspective of campus law enforcement.

While this isn't the first time we've focused on alcohol education for college students, we're very excited to work with students from these schools!

Apolo Anton Ohno wraps up tour!

March 15, 2010

Our nationwide Ask, Listen, Learn tour with Apolo Anton Ohno came to a satisfying conclusion on Friday, in Apolo’s hometown of Seattle.

We knew it was going to be big. Apolo was excited to come home, and Seattle was excited to see him. There were a lot of people in Seattle excited about the program and Apolo’s involvement, and we’re sorry we couldn’t fit all of you in!

Robert McKenna
, Attorney General of Washington, introduced Apolo. “Apolo is an excellent example for kids in our state, demonstrating that you can do anything when you choose dedication, determination, and living a healthy and active lifestyle and reject underage drinking.”

While the tour may be over, the Ask, Listen, Learn program’s work continues. Visit www.asklistenlearn.com often to keep up with our efforts – read the blog, sign up your kid to be a member of our Ask Listen Learn Team, and learn about our newest SuperStar – Dara Torres – who will appear in an Ask Listen Learn advertorial in SI KIDS’ April issue. It'll be out on April 1st.

Anthony Wolf: My teen objects to my boyfriend moving in

March 8, 2010

Source: Toronto Globe and Mail

During the year and a half that Amber's mother had been seeing Marty, he'd always been warm towards Amber. But from the start, Amber had been less than cordial towards Marty.

“Get up, Marty. That's where I sit. That's always my chair.”

“Marty, why are you wearing those shoes? They're all scuffed. They look stupid.”

Amber's mother had done all she could to get Amber to act more respectfully towards Marty – with little success.
