Girl Talk

Rockville High School hosts Girl Talk event

December 09, 2009

This Monday, The Century Council headed up to Rockville, MD to facilitate a Girl Talk event at Rockville High School. Girl Talk is a program that encourages peer-to-peer mentoring between high school and middle school girls. The program’s goal is to ultimately help middle school girls build self-esteem, and networks of mutual support. This will help them avoid dangerous behaviors such as underage drinking and to lead more positive, healthy lives.

The girls at Rockville High School were great to work with! We want to thank them for their enthusiasm and their commitment to making the right choices

Thanks again to everyone at Rockville High School for a great event!

The Century Council Participates in the National Soccer Hall of Fame's Induction Weekend

August 10, 2009

Over the past several years The Century Council has partnered with many professional athletes to encourage youth to live a healthy and active lifestyle and not consume alcohol underage. Shannon MacMillan, the 2002 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year, is one such athlete who shares our goal.  In addition to previously promoting the Girl Talk: Choices and Consequences of Underage Drinking initiative at several of her soccer camps, Shannon recently supported the Ask, Listen, Learn initiative at the Shannon MacMillan Soccer Clinic, held at the National Soccer Hall of Fame's Induction weekend. More than 180 attendees received Ask, Listen, Learn materials throughout the weekend and learned about the dangerous consequences of underage drinking.

The Century Council and the National Soccer Hall of Fame have been partners since 2007, working to motivate young people to lead healthy and active lives.

We thank Shannon MacMillan for her efforts in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking, and look forward to continuing to work with her and so many other outstanding role models for our youth.

Statistics show DUIs among women are on the rise

August 7, 2009

An article in the news today highlights the increasing number of women that are being arrested for drunk driving. The article references an FBI study that shows the number of women arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was 28.8 percent higher in 2007 than it was in 1998, while the number of men arrested was 7.5 percent lower (the study covers about 56 percent of the country). The article also mentions that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s drunk driving enforcement efforts this year will focus on women.

In 2006, The Century Council launched Girl Talk: Choices and Consequences of Underage Drinking, an initiative that encourages mothers and daughters to engage in an ongoing dialogue about the dangers of underage drinking and the specific risks facing teenage girls. The program recently partnered with Girl Talk: Desire to Inspire, a peer-to-peer mentoring program that offers positive weekly meetings and community service projects for middle school girls.

The data is clear that while men represent the majority of drunk driving arrests, more and more evidence suggests that the gap between men and women is narrowing. With programs such as Girl Talk: Desire to Inspire, The Century Council is working to educate young women about the unique risks they face from underage drinking with the goal of helping them learn how to make responsible decisions that will serve them well, both, now and later in life.

Congratulations to Mia Hamm and Siri Mullinix!

May 4, 2009

A hearty congrats to Mia Hamm and Siri Mullinix who were the first Washington Freedom alumni inducted into the “Hall of Freedom!” The Century Council was the title night sponsor of the May 3rd Washington Freedom game against the St. Louis Athletica.

Mia and Siri are role models for youth nationwide! The Century Council continues to partner with athletes as role models because we recognize the studies that show that participation in sports may be a protective factor against risky behaviors such as underage drinking. We set up a booth during the Freedom’s “Fan Fest” and distributed information about our Girl Talk: Choices and Consequences of Underage Drinking program. We encouraged game attendees and their parents to communicate about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and to discuss the dangers of underage drinking. We also talked with game attendees about starting Girl Talk chapters in their schools.

The Century Council is proud to have worked with Mia and Siri through our Girl Talk program. Mia Hamm has highlighted the program during her “Mia and Nomar Celebrity Soccer Challenge” as well as at during her induction, alongside Julie Foudy, into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Siri Mullinix has participated in Girl Talk events in her home state of North Carolina as well as Washington, DC, Rhode Island, and Maine!

The Century Council wants teens to say “yes” to a healthy lifestyle and “no” to underage drinking!
