Dr. Wolf: Teen sex comes to a bedroom near you

June 30, 2009

It's not an arrangement that most parents choose so much as one they succumb to under pressure

Dear Dr. Wolf,

I'd appreciate your views on the boyfriend/girlfriend sleepover. It's not unusual these days for older teens to expect their parents to allow them to have their boyfriend or girlfriend "sleep over," and sometimes practically move in to the family home. Many parents in my circle of friends permit this. In my own case, my 17-year-old daughter's father allows her to have her boyfriend sleep overnight in her room at his house. I don't permit boyfriend sleepovers at my house. Her boyfriend is welcome to visit and join us for family events, but sleeping in the same room is something that, in my mind, comes with being self-supporting. As a consequence, my daughter no longer stays at my house, preferring the greater sexual freedom she is allowed at her father's. Am I out of date, or will she thank me one day?

Old-Fashioned Mom

Dear Old-Fashioned Mom,

An eight-year-old girl bounces into her parents' room and asks: "Can my boyfriend sleep over in my room when I'm 17? Of course, we'll have sex when he's there."

A Reminder to Not Drive Drunk This Fourth of July - An eCard by The Century Council

June 23, 2009

The Century Council created an innovative eCard for the July 4th holiday that reminds viewers to stay safe this Independence Day and not drive drunk. You can view the eCard now. We have previously produced eCards for prom and graduation, the winter holidays, and National Teen Driver Safety Week.

The Fourth of July eCard takes you through some activities that may happen on a typical July 4th day – a burger is flipped on the grill, a flag is waved, a horseshoe is tossed. But it ends with the story of how someone has too much to drink, gets in their car, and puts lives in danger.

We hope this eCard serves as a reminder to stay safe this Fourth of July (and always) and never drive drunk. As always, you can send the eCard to a friend, and post it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

High school's over. You're no longer their boss

June 15, 2009

If your teen is graduating, it's time to renegotiate the laws of the land

Anthony E. Wolf

It's that time of year - when parents of graduating high-school children begin facing what happens next.

Many of your kids will be leaving town for university. But many won't. And the ones who are going away may still be home for the summer.

The difference is they are now newly minted adults.

"Desmond, would you please not leave your dirty dishes sitting around the house. I need you to wash them and put them away. Would you please clean them up, now."

"I'm busy right now, but I will later."

"No, I need you to clean them up now."

"Mom, you don't get it. I'm not your little kid who you can boss around any more."

Now that your teen is finished with the high-school part of his life, society no longer considers him a child; nor does he. He is officially a young adult. It's a very real shift - one that has repercussions when your child is still under your roof.

D.C. United wins 2-1 in match sponsored by The Century Council!

June 15, 2009

D.C. United prevailed by a score of 2-1 over the Chicago Fire in Saturday's Major League Soccer match at RFK Stadium. As we blogged about last week, The Century Council sponsored Saturday's game and is an official corporate sponsor of D.C. United for the second consecutive year. Before the game, we interacted with hundreds of D.C. United fans outside the stadium and discussed our mission of fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Inside the stadium, The Century Council partnered with the DC Stoddert soccer league to put on mini-games during halftime of the United game. Additionally, Christian Gomez, D.C. United's star midfielder and who is featured in our ad in Nickelodeon Magazine's August issue, scored what proved to be the winning goal on a beautiful free kick.

It was a great day had by all and we look forward to working with D.C. United the remainder of the season! Be sure to check out some pictures and videos from Saturday below.
